The Chrysanthemum

For those who enjoy experimenting with colours and shapes getting off the beaten track, versatile chrysanthemums afford a wealth of opportunities.

Chrysanthemums are known for the endless range of colouring in which they are cultivated: white, yellow, green, red, cream and pink – but also in less traditional colours such as bronze orange, crimson, lilac, mauve, purple and violet. And then there are also the various two colour variants.

Each chrysanthemum has its own charm : spherical, with sprouts, as advanced daisies or as colourful buds. Besides traditional chrysanthemums racemes there are also disbudded chrysanthemums and small –flowered chrysanthemums (santini).

The conclusion is unmistakable, chrysanthemums are extremely versatile, as a result, they fit in any interior, in any season and on many occasions.

  • In the Far East, chrysanthemum flowers are boiled to make a sweet tea. The tea, which has a cooling effect, supposedly speeds up recovery from influenza. The green tea leaves of some varieties are wok-cooked with garlic and red pepper. The chrysanthemums available in the Netherlands, however, are only for decorative purposes. The name chrysanthemum comes from the Greek. Literally, it means ‘golden flower’: chrys (gold) and ‘anthemon’ (flower). The name stems from the original yellow-gold colour.
